  : Location was ok
: The owner of the hotel tried to haggle with me over the price. Booking.com stated the room would be £33 a night. The owner told me it would be £55 minimum for the rooms after we had booked them. He then continued to try and haggle over the price until i told him id go else where if he didnt change me the price i agreed to pay when i made the booking.

: Do not ever stay here! There is not a single positive thing I could say about our experience here. The place is grotty, dingy, dirty, outdated. My whole family were visiting Oxford for my Grampa's 90th birthday, it was a very special, sentimental trip, probably the last time in his life he will get to visit where he grew up. There were 17 of us in total and obviously due to the current circumstances with the pandemic finding accommodation to fit us all was going to be tricky. I found Athena Guesthouse on booking.com and it had availability for us all, seemed reasonably priced, had a 3 star rating and the photos looked nice enough (nothing fancy but cheap and cheerful which was fine for just one night) Turns out the 3 star rating is massively exaggerated, we have since discovered over 89 horrific reviews on TripAdvisor and I think the reason the star rating is reasonable is that staff have added fake reviews. I should have known there would be problems when the property was ignoring my correspondence in the run up to our stay. This property is NOT disabled friendly, which I enquired about and they never answered. They had my family wait out in the cold for about an hour while the staff member argued with us about letting us see the rooms before we paid. My Gran was really poorly and caught a chill waiting outside. The hallway is disgusting, filthy dirty and the room out back to pay looked like a squat with duvets hanging in the windows like curtains. I didn't want to pay until we'd seen the rooms, she kept demanding money first. 3 of the rooms were in a completely separate building with shared bathrooms that were also being shared with other guests who were smoking in the rooms and doing weed. Considering the pandemic situation, I think that's disgusting. There was a rat outside that members of my family saw whilst they waited. We would have left but were worried we would lose our money. My Grampa was freezing cold all night.
